White chocolate crackle candy

I have wanted to post this quick and easy recipe for months now.  Ever since our Minecraft party I've had numerous requests for how to make "Redstone" candy.  For those that are Minecraft illiterate, "Redstone" is an ore in the Minecraft game that is sparkly and a little bit sparky.  It is used to create circuits that can control levers, doors, switches and tons of other elaborate things.  For our party I wanted to make a candy that had a little kick to it just like Redstone.

This recipe may be simple but the crackle and pop affect it has is super cool.  I love to watch the face people (mostly kids) make when they eat this candy.  At first it just seems like crunchy chocolate but then after a few seconds it's like a popping explosion in your mouth.  So here's the recipe but don't blink or you might miss it.

White Chocolate Crackle Candy

Ingredients:
12oz bag white chocolate chips* or 1 bag red candy melts
2 packets strawberry or watermelon Pop candy
1 Tbs Shortening

*red food coloring if using white chocolate chips

First place your chocolate and shortening in a microwave safe bowl and microwave for one minute and stir. Then continue to microwave at 15 second intervals (2  to 3 times) stirring between each. Once you see the chocolate start to melt just keep stirring until fully melted.  It's better not to microwave for too long or the chocolate will seize up and get gummy.

If using red candy melts don't worry about shortening.

Once again if you are using white chocolate chips then add about 20 to 30 drops of food coloring to the melted chocolate and stir.  The best you will get is dark pink.  With white chocolate it's almost impossible to dye it red.  That's why I like the red candy melts better, but they are not always easy to find.

Next add the pop candy to the melted chocolate. Gently fold it in so as not to agitate the candy too much.  You will hear some popping while you stir, but the gentler you are the less it will pop.

When you are done stirring it should look a little bit lumpy, but still smooth and of spreading consistency.

Lay a sheet of wax paper on a cookie sheet or directly on the counter.  Mine was cool enough that it was fine on the countertop.  Then leave it alone for about 30 minutes or until cool and firm to the touch.

To cut just transfer the whole sheet to a cutting board and slice the chocolate into rows.  You can also just break it into uneven pieces with your hands if that's the look you are going for.

It's perfectly fine to do some sampling at this stage.  Just to make sure it's crackelrific.  You can store these in an airtight container for up to two weeks before serving.  Making them the perfect make ahead treat.

Then if you are feeling really creative you can serve the crackle candy in some mine cart treat cups.

Get it just like you mined it?  Right out of Minecraft:)  Sorry my geekiness is showing.

You can find a printable version of this recipe here.

Enjoy!
